Thawing the Chill – What You Need to Winterize Your Skin

By Noel de’Paul

For many people, a cold winter day can spell disaster for the skin, resulting in a dull, dry-ashen appearance. Others experience severe dehydration which manifests itself with flaky, cracking and inflamed skin. The winter months, with the combination of cold weather and recycled heat, are a sure fire way to wreak havoc on your skin. However, all this can be avoided by boosting your winter skin care regimen. It’s simple! Just cleanse, tone, moisturize, and indulge in supplementary skin care and you will be sure to keep the skin healthy.

All skin is not created equal! So it’s imperative that you cleanse the skin, using a cleanser that addresses the specific needs of your skin. In most cases, skin is broken down into three main categories: normal, normal/combination, and oily. The way in which your cleanser reacts to the skin relies on you knowing your skin type. Start with using a mild cleanser, such as CLEAN by Zirh. This cleanser removes dirt and oil without over drying; using alpha hydroxy acids to lift surface dead skin cells, uncovering new, smoother skin. Alpha Hydroxy Acid acts as a natural exfoliant and anti-aging agent, by helping to clarify the skin, shrink enlarged pores, and re-texture the skin.

Toning is important, as it is the protective step after the cleansing of skin. It keeps your pores clean, skin healthy and breathing and thus more receptive to ultimate nourishing care that comes from moisturizing. For men, the need for a skin toner is essential since they have 15% oiler skin and considerably larger pores than women.

Laura Mercier has developed Perfecting Water Light  & Perfecting Water Rich, for those of you who need a little extra moisture during those frosty winter months. It acts as a catalyst by temporarily over hydrating the skin, allowing deeper penetration of ingredients, moisturizers and further treatments. Further, it enhances metabolic reaction within the skin and helps cell renewal. The tonic rebuilds and repairs skin’s surface layers and lipid barriers, minimizing and reducing enlarged pores.

Well moisturized skin equals happy, healthy skin! The process of moisturizing both the face and under eye area is one of the most important steps in your skin care regimen. It is especially important in the winter months for a few reasons. First a good moisturizer will quench the skin and deliver the extra water that the skin needs to remain vibrant. Additionally, it will keep the skin healthy and less prone to fine lines and wrinkles…Ok guys, women are not the only ones obsessing over the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles! Crème de la Mer makes an amazing, must-have facial moisturizer which hydrates dry-flaky skin, soothes sensitivities, and helps minimize pores and fine lines.  This moisturizer is legendary; guaranteed to transform the texture of skin practically overnight. Anthony Logistics for Men makes a good continous moisture anti-aging eye cream that nourishes cells, firms, brightens, and tones the eye area. It uses Shea Butter and Squalane to provide skin with deep hydration, along with Vitamins A, C and E to protect and help diminish fine lines and dark circles. Many of us forget about the skin underneath the eye and believe it’s unnecessary to use a separate moisturizer when already using face cream. However, the skin around the eye does not have oil glands and needs a more emollient cream than for the face. So take a little extra time to replenish the skin underneath the eyes…you’ll thank me later!

Supplementary skincare, includes masks which can be used to calm, soothe, and hydrate the skin during the winter months. Laura Mercier’s Intensive Moisture Mask softens and moisturizes dry, chapped skin while diminishing dark spots and brightens for better clarity. Whereas its Hydra Soothing Gel Mask instantly hydrates, plumps and relieves dry, stressed skin. It uses aloe vera gel, allantoin, chamomile and cucumber extracts to reduce redness and puffiness. These two masks are a winning combination! They are sure to address issues of problematic skin caused by winter weather.

Where can I get these products? I wouldn’t know where to find any of these. Also, can’t I just use simpler stuff like pure shea butter as a moisturizer, and witch hazel as a toner?
